When I first started our business, I tried drinking from the fire hose of knowledge, reading and attending numerous seminars. Then I would work to implement all of the things I learned. After a while I was overwhelmed, almost “frozen” with information, insights, and ‘to do’s’, to the point of our business suffering because of my need to get it all right per someone else’s perspective and priorities. I often found that ideas would clash and not work well together.
Similarly, I often have clients come back from seminars with their books and programs asking us to duplicate what others have created. My response…”Let’s set this aside and first discuss you and your needs.”
After listening to what is truly important to them and after asking them some pointed searching questions, I do find that only 20 -30% of the “Kool-aid” that they were about to whole heartedly swallow ends up being valuable.
When attending educational events, go with a listening ear, with the goal of finding one or two gold nuggets that apply to you.
