With recent thunderstorms, here are few tips that may help you.
Roof Leak:
In the event of a roof leak, there are a couple of temporary fixes that are fairly easy to do which, if you do them yourself, could save hundreds of dollars and prevent further damage until it can be professionally repaired.
A temporary roof repair may be as easy as purchasing a can of wet seal roof tar, rubber gloves and putty knife. If that is not an option some plastic sheeting and a few heavy objects to hold it in place can buy you time till it can be fixed permanently.
When you see a ceiling leak, take a waste basket or pail and place it on the floor below the leak, then take a pencil or screwdriver or something similar and make a hole in the middle of the ceiling where the water is dripping to let all the water escape. This keeps the water from pooling above the ceiling and spreading to other parts which can cause major damage to the acoustical ceiling or drywall.
Water Damage:
What should you do if you have water damage?
- Stop the water source any way you can, even if temporary. Have a professional help you when needed. Don’t fear that you may make it worse. Insurance companies never question stopping a leak and reducing the amount of water damage and the cost associated with doing so.
- Call your insurance company and notify them of a potential claim.
- Get all damaged materials out (a professional could help you if needed) especially with water-soaked drywall and insulation to prevent water from sitting, mold from forming and moisture spreading. Carpet and other minor damage can often be dried out without extraction.
- Get fans out to dry out the walls, floors, and cabinetry as applicable. When in question, consult a professional.
- Do repairs after areas are confirmed dry (this prevents mold from forming).
